CAN DO’s Student Action Committee is comprised of local high school students appointed to serve as non-voting members of the CAN DO Board of Directors. Recognizing the mutual benefits of increased student involvement, CAN DO and the students collaboratively established the new Student Chair position in 2023 to enhance the student’s contributions to the organization’s initiatives.
This year, CAN DO is pleased to announce that Alex Composto will take on the responsibilities of Student Chair for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Alex, a rising senior from MMI Preparatory School, will step into this leadership role following a year of service on the Board as a Junior representative.
Alex was first introduced to the Student Action Committee by SAC graduate Sophia Plonk, who shared insights into its operations and the unique opportunities it offers. “Initially, I was mostly interested by the opportunity given to committee members to sit in on board meetings run by CAN DO,” said Alex. “I found that to be a very special opportunity that not many people my age would be given.”
In addition to attending and preparing for board meetings, Alex was heavily involved in community events alongside his peers. One of his most memorable experiences to date was co-chairing CAN DO’s signature holiday events – the third annual CAN DO Community Park Tree Lighting ceremony and the 30th Annual CAN DO Community Christmas. Reflecting on his other experiences, Alex highlighted being among the first students to participate in the pilot launch of tecBRIDGE’s Youth Entrepreneurship Credentialing (YEC) program, a program designed to help young people in Northeast Pennsylvania tie entrepreneurship and innovation into their everyday lives through an interactive micro-credentialing program which is set to officially launch later this year.
After a positive experience as a Junior member, Alex was inspired by CAN DO’s first Student Chair, Sarah Polashenski, to aim for the position. Witnessing Sarah's dedication motivated Alex to pursue the role, "Seeing all the hard work she put into the position gave me the drive to go out and work for it myself. It was right after the Tree Lighting that I realized this is something I wanted to attain.”
As the new Student Chair, Alex’s primary goal is to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment for all committee members. "As an introverted student myself, I know how difficult it is to find your voice in a room of unfamiliar people. I want to ensure that each new student feels like they are already part of the committee from the very start," he explained.
Outside of his commitments with CAN DO, Alex is active in soccer and drama club, having played the sport since 1st grade and participated in theatre since 6th grade. For his future goals, he plans to major in environmental engineering in college, a field he is passionate about and believes can make a positive impact in. Alex credits his family, particularly his parents Nicole and Stephen Composto, as his biggest supporters.
Alex is also deeply involved in his community, frequently participating in volunteer work through his church, Most Precious Blood Parish, and tutoring underclassmen at MMI. He finds community service rewarding and enjoys encouraging friends to join him in these activities. His tutoring efforts in Biology, Math, Spanish, and English have helped him develop as a leader, and he has adapted his teaching methods to suit different learning styles. He looks forward to further growing his leadership skills during his tenure as Student Chair.
