Operation CanDo Logo 2022 v2The CAN DO Student Action Committee, in collaboration with the Freeland American Legion Post 473, announces the 20th annual Operation: CAN DO.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the campaign, which creates care packages for military service members hailing from the Greater Hazleton area who are serving away from home during the upcoming holiday season.

Running throughout the month of October, the drive aims to bring the community together to show appreciation for those who serve and make the holiday season a little brighter for these military heroes.

Pat Ward, Student Action Committee advisor, reflected on the collaboration, which has become an annual effort between the Student Action Committee, CAN DO staff, Freeland American Legion, and area schools and industries.

“We’re again reaching out for support from the community to ensure that our brave servicemen and women receive the personal items they need. For our students, it’s an invaluable opportunity to learn the importance of giving back,” Ward said.

Made up of local high school students who serve as non-voting members of the CAN DO Board of Directors, the CAN DO Student Action Committee plays an essential part in coordinating this initiative. This year’s drive is led by co-chairs Javier Vazquez, a senior from Hazleton Area High School, and McKenna Gerhard, a junior from Weatherly Area High School. Both students are working closely with local schools, businesses and organizations to bring the community together for this cause.

“I’m excited to contribute and can’t wait to see the impact we can make for our military service members,” Gerhard said.

Vazquez also expressed enthusiasm to be a part of something important like Operation: CAN DO, for both the leadership and social skills gained, as well as the campaign’s philanthropic effects on the students’ communities.

“This experience is a great opportunity to challenge myself and give back in a meaningful way,” Vazquez said.
