The CAN DO Student Action Committee stayed busy throughout the year, hosting annual events that allowed students to develop leadership skills, grow professionally, and experience the impact of community service firsthand.
As the 2024-2025 Student Chair, Alexander Composto, a senior at MMI Preparatory, embraced these values, leading the committee with dedication and enthusiasm. Now, as his tenure comes to a close, he reflects on the skills he’s gained and the lasting impact the Student Action Committee will continue to have
“Serving in this role gave me a level of responsibility I had not yet been able to attain,” Composto said. “I feel much more confident in my public speaking, I’ve improved my organizational skills, and I’ve worked to ensure that students feel comfortable and engaged as members of the committee.”
Throughout the year, Composto worked closely with CAN DO staff and fellow committee members to coordinate signature events such as Operation:CAN DO, CAN DO Community Park Tree Lighting, and CAN DO Community Christmas, as well as the Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress’ Wassailfest & Downtown Hazleton Night Market in December. He also served as the primary liaison between students and CAN DO leadership, ensuring that student voices were heard and that the committee remained an active participant in CAN DO’s initiatives.
Looking ahead, Composto is confident that the Student Action Committee will continue to thrive.
“I know I’m going to reflect on this experience for every leadership role I take on in the future,” he said. “I am so proud to have been part of such a wonderful, talented group of students, and while I won’t be there to see it firsthand, I’m excited for the committee to continue growing.”
The CAN DO Student Action Committee was established to encourage student involvement in community and economic development while fostering the next generation of leaders in the Greater Hazleton Area. Composed of juniors and seniors from local high schools, the committee serves in a non-voting capacity on the CAN DO Board of Directors, actively participating in community projects and board meetings under the guidance of Student Action Committee advisors Patrick Ward and Ana Perez. The Student Chair position was created last year in response to SAC members’ desire to play a more substantial role in the organization.
