Operation: CAN DO Celebrates 21 Years of Holiday Care Packages for Local Troops

The CAN DO Student Action Committee, in partnership with the Freeland American Legion Post 473, has officially launched the 21st Annual Operation: CAN DO drive. The campaign, which runs throughout the month of October, unites schools, businesses, and community members to assemble holiday care packages for military service members from the Greater Hazleton area who are serving away from home this season.

Each year, the initiative provides a tangible way for the community to express gratitude while reminding local troops that they are remembered and supported during the holidays. Donations of goods and monetary contributions will be collected through October 31st, with area schools and businesses once again serving as key partners in gathering items for the packages.

“This effort continues to thrive because of the generosity of our community,” said Pat Ward, CAN DO’s Community Relations Committee Chair and Student Action Committee Co-Advisor. “It’s an opportunity not only to support our servicemen and women, but also for our students to learn firsthand the value of giving back.”

The 2025 campaign is being led by Student Action Committee Co-Chairs Ariamdalys Ramos Alvarez, a senior, and Yevhenni (Eugene) Hradil, a junior from the Hazleton Area Academy of Sciences. Together, they are coordinating with local schools, businesses, and organizations to maximize the impact of this year’s drive.

“During Operation: CAN DO, we build upon the can-do spirit. I’m proud to be part of a team that can send a piece of home to the heroes who serve,” said Ramos Alvarez. Hradil added, “Being part of Operation: CAN DO is an honor because it allows us, as students, to give back in a meaningful way. It’s inspiring to see schools, businesses, and families come together to support those who sacrifice so much for us.”

Community members are encouraged to support the effort through donations of nonperishable snacks, toiletries, games, and other personal items placed in collection boxes located throughout the community. Monetary contributions are also welcomed to help cover postage and shipping costs; checks can be made payable to CAN DO, Inc. c/o Operation: CAN DO and mailed to 1 S. Church St., Suite 200, Hazleton, PA 18201.

In addition, CAN DO is seeking names and contact information for active-duty service members from the Greater Hazleton area so they may be included in this year’s mailing. If you have a loved one serving or wish to make a contribution, please contact Ana Perez at aperez@hazletoncando.com.
