Hazleton Works: Supporting Creativity at Scale with Michaels

Michaels Companies, Inc., operates one of its seven major North American distribution hubs in the Greater Hazleton Area, supporting stores across the Northeast region from its nearly 700,000-square-foot facility in Humboldt Industrial Park.

Founded in 1973, Michaels is North America’s leading creative destination, operating more than 1,300 stores across the United States and Canada. While customers may know Michaels for its arts and crafts supplies, seasonal décor, and custom framing services, the company’s Hazleton facility plays a critical behind-the-scenes role in keeping products moving efficiently throughout its retail network.

As Michaels approaches its 25th anniversary in the Greater Hazleton Area in 2027, the Hazleton Distribution Center continues to serve as an important hub within the company’s North American distribution network.

Director of Distribution Kevin Ferry pointed to the region’s accessibility to major transportation routes and markets as an advantage for the facility.

“Logistically, we’re in a really good location here, and that’s why this area is growing,” Ferry said. “We have Interstates 80 and 81, with New York and Philadelphia and other good markets really close to us.”

The business advantages are matched by the opportunities Michaels provides for employees and their families.

“The Greater Hazleton Area has provided me with a family-oriented place to work and raise my family,” Human Resources Generalist Glenys Alvarez said.

Michaels’ Hazleton Distribution Center is a key employer in the Greater Hazleton Area, supporting a workforce made up largely of local residents. The facility manages a complex distribution network that supports both traditional retail store replenishment and e-commerce fulfillment operations.

Team members oversee inbound receiving, inventory management, order fulfillment, and outbound shipping using warehouse technology and automated equipment that support efficient and safe operations.

As the facility has grown over the past two decades, Michaels has continued to invest in both its operations and its workforce, creating opportunities across a wide range of careers. Positions at the Hazleton Distribution Center range from entry-level material handlers and equipment drivers to human resources, asset protection, facilities, and leadership roles.

Josh Oravic, Human Resources Manager, said the company looks for employees who are willing to learn and contribute as they build their careers.

“If you come with a positive attitude and a really strong work ethic, you will be successful here at Michaels,” Oravic said.

For many employees, the opportunity for professional advancement is one of the organization’s defining characteristics. Michaels maintains clear advancement pathways for employees, including opportunities for operations coordinators to progress into management training programs and leadership positions.

“What matters most is the desire to grow,” Department Manager Grisleydi Florentino said. “This is the perfect company for that. If you’re willing to put in the effort, are responsible, show up to work, pay attention, and demonstrate that you want to advance, you can achieve it.”

Ferry has witnessed that growth firsthand.

“One of the best parts of my job is seeing people develop over the years, seeing their wins and watching them reach their career goals,” Ferry said. “Seeing someone move on to become a department manager is pretty exciting.”

The company’s continued investment in its people and operations reflects the broader strengths that have made the Greater Hazleton Area a destination for logistics and distribution companies seeking strategic advantages and long-term growth opportunities.

Through Hazleton Works, Michaels demonstrates how global brands can build lasting relationships within the communities where they operate while creating meaningful career pathways for local residents.
