CAN DO Staff Members Earn Economic Development Finance Professional Certifications

June 5, 2026

CAN DO, Inc., Director of Economic Development Jocelyn Sterenchock and Economic Development Manager Nico Makuta have each earned certification as Economic Development Finance Professionals (EDFP) through Grow America, a national organization that provides economic development training and resources to professionals and communities across the United States.

In Sterenchock’s role as the Director of Economic Development, she leads business support programming, real estate and industry recruitment, technical assistance initiatives, and the procurement and management of programmatic funding related to entrepreneurship and economic development efforts. Additionally, she oversees entrepreneurship and small business development initiatives for CAN DO through the CAN BE Innovation Center, where her team works with entrepreneurs and startup businesses throughout the Greater Hazleton Area.

Makuta serves as CAN DO’s Economic Development Manager and assists businesses and development projects with financing opportunities and funding coordination. His responsibilities include the planning, procurement, and administration of project-driven funding programs, as well as supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs seeking financing and growth opportunities.

The EDFP Certification recognizes individuals who successfully complete Grow America’s intensive economic development finance training series. The program provides instruction in business credit analysis, real estate financing, loan packaging, deal structuring and negotiation, and the creation and implementation of development programs.

The certification process includes four separate courses, each five days in length and culminating in an examination. Upon successful completion of all four courses and examinations, participants are awarded the EDFP Certification.

“Professional certifications such as the EDFP ensure that CAN DO continues to build upon its expertise in economic development financing while staying current on the programs, tools, and strategies available to support businesses and community development projects,” said CAN DO President and CEO Joseph Lettiere. “Jocelyn and Nico’s completion of this program demonstrates their commitment to professional growth and further strengthens CAN DO’s ability to support continued economic opportunities throughout the Greater Hazleton Area.”

The EDFP Certification further expands CAN DO’s internal expertise in business financing, entrepreneurship support, and economic development programming, strengthening the organization’s ability to assist businesses, developers, and community partners across the region.
